Independent Reading

Independent reading is vital to a well rounded literacy curriculum. Students will practice the skills they have learned through conferencing and Guided Reading during this time. Students are to read to themselves while I work with other groups on their Guided Reading strategies. My library will be stocked full of interesting books and it will not be leveled. I want my students to make good choices about books that they can read by using the I-pick  good fit books strategy. I hope that my students will develop a love for reading just like I have through the use of engaging texts that are available for them to read at school and at home.

Evidence 1: I Pick Good Fit Books

Here is a poster that I will discuss with my students about the type of books that they should be picking. This will allow students to make the choice about what they are reading instead of relying on a leveled text type of system. The goal for the students when picking books is to be able to comprehend a book that they choose while reading with a purpose in mind.

Evidence 2: Book Box

Each student will have their own book box. This book box is for students to store their good fit books in while reading them. Having a book box makes independent reading time run more efficiently. Students know exactly where their book is at and they can quickly begin reading instead of digging for the book through the classroom library.
